Surviving the Ecommerce Competition

Posted on 4th July 2010 by admin in ecommerce

Just as putting up any other business, e-commerce has also its
own trade secrets. Not applying those trade secrets could
detrimental to the survival of an e-commerce site.

While many webmasters believe that content is king, if you only
depend on this one aspect of e-commerce, it is not the only
factor that one should concentrate on. The uniqueness of the
content of a site could attract visitors and for other sites to
link to your site as well.

Another factor to consider is optimizing the pages of a site.
Optimizing these pages include putting the right title tags, the
right pictures, making these pages searchable by the spiders of
the different search engines, putting the right navigation
tools, and many more.

Marketing your site is also a critical factor to consider. This
is your way of driving traffic to your site. Driving traffic
refers to bringing in more visitors to your site – that is to
let other people know what products or services you have from
your site.

Driving traffic may take in many forms. Most webmasters compete
for a particular keyword in the search engines. As of this
writing, the three most popular search engines are Yahoo, MSN,
and Google. Therefore, it is important that your site could be
found by these search engines.

Submitting your site to the different portals is also a good
factor to consider. Your presence in these portals is also
important. As a reminder, marketing your site means making your
site presence in as many sites as possible.

Many other important marketing strategies do exist. These
include linking exchanges, opt-in email marketing, viral
marketing, and many more. It is important to note that you know
the details of how to engage in these strategies to avoid being
penalized. Most importantly, DO NOT SPAM.

Spamming can only make your site banned by the internet service
providers (ISP’s) and the search engines. Spamming can only make
all your efforts useless; your time and money spent worthless;
and most of all, your site may no longer exist.

While e-commerce has created some millionaires, not applying
e-commerce strategies correctly has also made many broke.
E-commerce has become a very highly competitive field of
business. It takes time to make your site well established.
E-commerce is not a quick-rich-scheme. On the average, it takes
four to six months or more to make your site well established.

Should anyone try to venture in e-commerce, the most important
virtues one should have is patience and persistence. Now that we
have spilled some beans, it is up to you to make it in the world
of e-commerce

Ecommerce 101: Design to Sell

Posted on 9th June 2010 by admin in ecommerce

The single most important goal of an eCommerce website is getting your visitor to buy. To do this you need to understand the psychology and marketing strategies that need to be part of your eCommerce website design.

What kind of retail store would you rather shop at? At a small store with a few items for sale where the merchandise is not well organized, things are hard to find and where the check out stand is a long complicated process? Would you rather shop at a store with good selection that is well organized into departments, well lit with wide aisles and a quick and easy checkout area?

Why would an eCommerce store be any different? Many of the principles that we apply to traditional retail stores need to be applied to an eCommerce website. Make it easy to find products. A good eCommerce website design will lead the visitor to the right page in one or two clicks at most.

A good eCommerce website is a clean, organized store where products are easy to locate and visitors are allowed to shop the way they want. What should you do to improve the effectiveness of your online store once a visitor arrives?

1. Plan your layout: Avoid a cluttered layout. Visual cluttering is a result of trying to put too much information onto a single page. You should limit your design to no more than 10-15 products per page and no more than 600 words of text.

2. Organize: Break text up into easy to read blocks or columns the way a newspaper does. Use graphics and colors to help break up the page to give a clean graphical look. Add headlines above blocks of text to allow visitors to quickly scan a page. Your website design layout should make it clear what it is they will find on your website. Design a clear path for navigation to guide your visitor through your website.

3. Categories: Add navigation and category listings so customers can find products in different ways. Use categories like departments in your store, and sub-categories if you stock a wide variety. Allow customers to browse by price category, newest products or most popular products.

4. Add Search Capability: If customers have something specific in mind or know exactly what they want, allow them to search by keyword, brand, model number or a combination of these. Keep the search simple, intuitive and easy to use.

5. Provide Purchase Options: Offer phone numbers or online chat assistance. Some visitors may be uncomfortable with completing a purchase online and want to place an order by phone or mail in an order with a check.

6. Keep the Checkout Process Simple: 30-60% of customers abandon their order at checkout because of usability issues. Design your process to be 1-2 pages and only request necessary information. Use clean and organized design layouts and add a confirmation page.

7. Show Shipping Prices: No-one likes hidden or surprise fees, especially as they have their credit card in hand and waiting to pay. Allow customers to see shipping charges up front by entering only their zip code.

Which Pages to Include?

E-commerce is based on trust. Other than the store itself, what other pages should be included in an eCommerce website design? There are number of other pages, each designed to build trust, to answer a shopper’s questions and to put them at ease in doing business with you.

  1. About Us: This is where you tell your story and tell why you are better to do business with than your competitors, what is the company’s purpose, the history of your company, your philosophy of doing business. Use a creative and interesting writing style to let your potential customers get to know you. This is one of the most read pages in a website.
  2. Testimonials: People will trust what other people say about you, much more then what you say about yourself. Positive customers that are specific are the most powerful. Here is an example of a powerful testimonial with detail. “You guys are great and helped me out of a jam; your customer service ran my order out to the airport so I could get it the same day. You’re the best!”
  3. FAQ: Frequently asked questions are an important part of the pre-sale step. By posting answers to the common questions or objections, you reduce the phone calls and emails from potential buyers. By satisfying the visitor’s questions on the spot, they are much more likely to make an immediate purchase.
  4. Privacy Policy: People are wary and want to protect their personal information. They want to know how you are going to use this information and if you will pass it onto others. This is another element in building trust.

Return Policy: One of the best ways to put customers at ease is through a well-thought-out and prominently posted returns procedure. This can range from all sales final to complete refunds

Ecommerce Websites

Posted on 8th June 2010 by admin in ecommerce

Ecommerce is the most recent step in the evolution of business transactions.ECommerce is a modern business methodology that addresses the needs of organisations, merchants, and consumers to cut costs while improving the quality of goods and services alongwith increasing speed of sevice delivery. More commonly, e-commerce is associated with the buying and selling of information, products, and services via computer networks today and in the future via any one of the myriad of networks that make up the Information Superhighway (I-way).

It may be used to carry out business-to-business or business-to-consumer transactions. Over the last few years, ecommerce has become a buzzword of the business and finance communities. As a result, more and more companies are embracing ecommerce and technology in order to capitalise on this new and growing marketplace. The rate of growth and acceptance of ecommerce has been nothing short of phenomenal and this growth is forecast to continue and even accelerate.

The main components of any ecommerce site are-

  • Website is the critical component through which the online client interacts with the ecommerce. If the web site is built professionally and have an authenticated look more people are attracted to the ecommerce mechanism.
  • Merchant Account is the one in through which all the cash transaction activities take place through ecommerce. It is therefore vital for ecommerce to get a merchant account before starting this mechanism.
  • Payment Transaction Software records the orders, the processing of the order and the cash transaction mechanisms. It is therefore important that the software is professionally built incorporating the entire essential requirements of ecommerce to carry out a feasible and reliable ecommerce trade mechanism.
  • Secure Server Connection is a critical component and its legitimacy helps to propel the ecommerce business.
  • Shopping Cart especially design software that allows online viewers to buy and purchase products on a website. If this component is carefully designed then it helps in to bring more business to the ecommerce business. The shopping carts provide a user friendly interfaced which enable online customers to buy products without much difficulty.

Payment Processing

Payment Flow

  1. The consumer enters an order along with their credit card information and sends it to the business.
  2. The business sends the consumer an invoice, their certificate and their bank’s certificate.
  3. The consumer acknowledges and approves this information and returns it to the
    business.
  4. The business then generates an authorization request for your credit card and sends
    it to their bank.
  5. The business’s bank then sends the credit authorization request to the Acquirer.
  6. The Acquirer sends an
acknowledgement back to the business’s bank after receiving an acknowledgement from the consumer’s bank.
  7. Once the consumer’s bank authorizes payment, the business’s bank sends an
acknowledgement back to the business with the authorization number.

A key ingredient of ecommerce is the ability to process orders and receive payments through an electronic storefront. Having an ecommerce presence offers enormous potential benefits to businesses and retailers, whatever the size. These benefits include:

  • Reduced Costs : reduced labour, reduced paper work, reduced errors in keying in data, etc.
  • Reduced Time : shorter lead times, faster delivery of product.
  • Flexibility with Efficiency : the ability to handle complex situations, product ranges and customer profiles without the situation becoming unmanageable.
  • No Physical Space Limitations: You can offer more products with an eCatalogue, than you can physically stock on shelves.
  • Enhanced Long-Term Trading Partner Relationships : improved communication between trading partners leads to enhanced long-term relationships.
  • Introduce Collaborative Working:With fast, reliable, and cheap eCommerce communications, it is possible for colleagues, customers, suppliers and partners, to use collaborative working practices to manage, share, and enhance project work, regardless of location.
  • Never Close: Available 24/7/365.
  • Lock in Customers : the closer you are to your customer and the more you work with them to change from normal business practices to best practice e-commerce the harder it is for a competitor to upset your customer relationship.
  • New Markets : the Internet has the potential to expand your business into wider geographical locations. However, it is necessary to develop the appropriate production capacity and distribution channels to support market demands generated by promoting your business to a larger marketplace.

Boost your Sales With an Ecommerce Website

Posted on 6th June 2010 by admin in ecommerce

Let’s face it. The online world is a machine built for businesses and communication and if you want to make money online, an ecommerce website is what you need. Owning and operating an online business is a very scary thought for some business owners. In order to keep up with the competition, having a website is the essential key. For the large companies, they have their on-board web designing staff built in. For the “mom and pop” stores, the online world can sometimes be a terrifying and overwhelming feeling. That is why it is so important to find the right ecommerce web design company that can suit your specific needs.

Before you begin the task of finding the right ecommerce web design company, you must think through a few items. First, do you sell a tangible product, service or information? Second, what are the major functional capabilities your store must have? Do you need a full line of attributes for your products, so potential customers have more options available to them? Do you need your product pages to have additional images or related products? Should your customers receive a discount if they order multiple products? Should there be free shipping? These are just a few examples of what your potential needs may be.

When contacting ecommerce web design companies or designers, make sure they are listening to exactly what you need. If you are unsure of what specifically you may need to get your ecommerce store started, find a reliable company that can assist you with all of your major needs. Finding an ecommerce web design company that also has marketing and search engine optimization services is your best bet. That way your ecommerce store front will not only function, be professional looking, but will have engrained into its code the very information the search engine spiders need to get your site ranked highly in the search engines. Having a website is just not good enough, you need to drive targeted traffic to your site.

Whether you decide to pay for advertising via the pay per click systems, advertising on the radio or T.V., or for search engine optimization services, you need to advertise. Your ecommerce website storefront will fail if you never drive targeted traffic to it. So decide what you want to spend to have your website listed naturally or sponsored in the search engines. Then decide on a company that has actually proven results. Not just simple random key word results, but the popular keywords as well. The company you decide to work with should have a good reputation with the rankings to back it up. Remember, you get what you pay for, so be smart about your advertising dollars.

Finally, once you have driven targeted traffic to your website, pay attention to the pages and paths that your visitors use throughout your site. You can do this by purchasing or downloading free software that can give you all of your website’s traffic in detail. Pay attention to where sales are dropping off and have your web designer make the necessary alterations to the site. Your ecommerce web designer should be able to give you detailed and logical direction as to what direction your new ecommerce website should go. Do you already have an ecommerce website and it’s just not making money? Maybe it’s time to consider a new ecommerce web designer that has marketing and search engine optimization services already built in.

E-commerce solution

Posted on 5th June 2010 by admin in ecommerce

Ecommerce website means the conducting of business communication and transactions over networks and through computers. Specifically, ecommerce solution is the buying and selling of goods and services, and the transfer of funds, through digital communications (or Online). Ecommerce also often refers to transactions occurring on the Internet, such as credit card purchases at web sites. Internet payment provider, a business providing merchant account establishment and transaction processing services. It may also provide ecommerce software and handle such things as digital delivery.

Ecommerce website is essential for the future growth of your business. We build websites that turn your visitors into customers. Future of ecommerce

According to a new study from the Center for Research in Electronic Commerce, This is such a dynamic field. Every day is a new day in the world of ecommerce. We see a lot of things, and looking in the near future, ecommerce will become the industrial revolution of the 21st Century. Certainly see happening is the decline of the revenue-share business model. EBusiness still has huge untapped potential & continues to grow robustly and hosted providers have revenue-share pricing models.

We personally believe that, over time, well see a major decline in the industrial economy, lot of larger merchants, particularly, moving away from those providers because they are not happy and willing to share a percentage of the order value. Most of the ecommerce and shopping-cart web development providers are focused on a more pure-play, Internet based solution. However, as the market consolidates, we think there will be more multi channel integration offerings. Among ecommerce providers, you’ll begin to see solutions that target specific verticals that weve probably already seen in the enterprise market. Along the same lines, because the customers and merchants are getting more sophisticated, and they are getting more comfortable with the online commerce world, they are beginning to demand those rich functionalities specific to their vertical and industry.

I see multi language rising into prominence because a lot of the growth in the ecommerce world is coming from abroad. U.S. merchants and North American, English-speaking merchants are looking to expand their market beyond their local country, and they are looking to tap into the world market. They will want to provide their store in a variety of different languages. I see the emergence of mobile commerce. Its beginning to happen. People are getting more and more web savvy when it comes to cell phones. Its more popular in Japan and Europe, but I believe U.S. merchants are likely to incorporate that.

I see the integration with other technologies out there such as social networks, playing a role in the ecommerce world. Social networks can influence the popularity of a product, and the question will be how you can integrate that into your ecommerce offering and make that more engaging?

What ecommerce solution to use for 1000 products?

Posted on 4th June 2010 by admin in ecommerce

I am a web designer / developer that has always created standard html sites. I will soon need to create my first site that also contains a shopping cart. What ecommerce solution do you recommend for approx. 1000 products that they will sell? I’m assuming that this will probably end up being database driven based on the volume. I’m not sure how I made it all of these years without doing an ecommerce site. Any advice would be great.

Once you pay for your hosting site, log into the Control Panel (CP). It will have all the Ecommerce programs your package provides ready to be installed. Some packages even come with a Content Management System (CMS) to install.

With that many pages, you might look into seeing if you may need to use Server Side Includes (SSI) for the regular HTML pages in case you need to add content to a nav menu or change some other content that appears on a 1000 pages. The eCommerce will use a database and will take care of that part of it.

If you plan to accept credit cards, you will have to pay for a secure server and certificate. Otherwise, you’ll have to stick to a Payment Gateway like PayPal.
